???  FAQ  ???

Who are the MAFSA members?

Members of MAFSA are professionals working with international or English Learner students in the public school systems surrounding Washington, D.C. Most members are from Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. They are responsible for the placement of these students
into elementary or secondary schools in their districts, and/or the evaluation of foreign
transcripts for students in high school.

How do I become a member of MAFSA?

To become a member, attend one of the three annual meetings (usually held in October, February, and May). A maximum of three members per school district can request membership. Members must attend at least one meeting of MAFSA each school year in order to remain active.

What are the benefits of membership?

MAFSA members get access to the Comparison Charts of School Systems and Grading Scales (The Charts), which are invaluable for professionals responsible for placing students in correct grades, evaluating secondary school transcripts, and determining graduation status. In addition, members enjoy being a part of a growing network of professionals with vast experience in international and English Learner student issues, access to professional resources that are up to date and current, and an opportunity to share their expertise with like-minded colleagues.  Speakers and presenters are invited to join our meetings and often present important information and resources in the field. For example, past meetings have covered topics such as the educational and socio-emotional needs of Central American minors, evaluation of records for refugees and students with interrupted education, meeting graduation requirements for English Learners, preparing immigrant students for college, and much more!

Can I attend a MAFSA meeting if I'm not a member?

Yes, anyone with an interest in MAFSA and its goals is welcome at any of the annual meetings.
However, non-members will not have access to the 'Charts'.
